Join us this Sunday for worship and a Community Evensong.

Dear friends,

We are in the first full week of our Tell Out My Soul Stewardship campaign. Most of the pledge packets have been distributed either in person or by mail. If you have not received your packet please contact the office.

Last Sunday I spoke about proportionate giving, that is giving a proportion of your income.  I mentioned that the church traditionally sets 10% of annual gross income as the proportion.  That standard, often called the tithe, has Biblical authority. But it should be acknowledged that in those Biblical references there was no other "taxing" authority.  Jesus never mentions tithing, quite possibly because the population was already overburdened by Roman taxes.

The Muslim system of assessment known as the Zakat (not Zagat, which is a guide to restaurants!), offers an alternative worth considering.  The Zakat is 2.5% of net worth, total savings and wealth. For those whose debts (mortgage, car loan, student loan, etc) outweigh their income and assets nothing is assessed.  For those who have large capital assets, a significant amount might be assessed.

The main idea here is that the responsibility for church operations is shared among the members of the church proportionally to the members income (tithing) or wealth (zakat).

Neither of these calculations takes into account the budget of the church.  The budget is based on what members give. And of course the budget is set not by the clergy and staff, but by the elected members of the vestry, each of whom is also paying their fair share.

Also, neither of the calculations, nor anything about our giving to the church, has anything whatsoever to do with our righteousness or standing before God. We do not give in order to justify ourselves or to get some benefit from God.  God after all has already given, and continues to give, everything to us, including the forgiveness that makes us right. So no one should give out of a sense of fear or guilt.  We give our share not to get something, but to participate in the work of the kingdom which is given to us.

With Gratitude,

Tuck Bowerfind

Holy Eucharist Rt I | 8 a.m. | In-Person and on YouTube

Christianity and Culture | 9:15 a.m. | In-Person and on Zoom

Oct. 26 Balaam and his Dilemma w/ Moabite King's Orders - Harvey Markowitz - At the beginning of Numbers 22, we are introduced to the Moabite King, Balak, who has just decided to commission the Aramean prophet Balaam to curse the wandering Hebrew people who will soon be amassing on his borders. Though a non-Hebrew, Balaam prays to Adonai to seek His approval for this undertaking. God’s response to the prophet’s request sets off a rich chain of events that has puzzled and intrigued Biblical theologians and historians for centuries. It is the goal of this presentation to identify some of these points of interest and the associated areas of contention.

Upcoming Christianity and Culture Sessions

November 2 - The “Saints” of the Pentateuch - Anne Grizzle - The Saints of God are all who love and serve God from long ago and including ourselves.  On this All Saints’  Sunday, Anne will present and lead a discussion of the saints from the Pentateuch and how we can honor and be inspired by them.  As you come, consider which people you most admire, such as Noah, Abraham, David, Joshua, and Moses.

November 9 - The Episcopal Church Past and Present - Mary Kostel (Chancellor of the Episcopal Church USA) - How is our beloved Episcopal Church structured, and how does that reflect our origins in the American Revolution?  How has the structure changed over time, and is it working today?  How do we exercise authority in a way that as we commit in our Baptismal Covenant, “respects the dignity of every human being”?

November 16 - Impact of the Pentateuch on the Old & New Testament - Rich Warkowski - Rich will focus on portrayals of Jesus in the Pentateuch (atonement, priesthood, liturgy, etc. For example, in Genesis 3:15, after the Fall of Adam & Eve, God gives the first promise and gentle “hint” of a rescue by another Adam (Jesus) that is to come.  That tiny kernel of information (revelations) is characteristic of Divine Progressive Revelation.

November 23 - Introduction of Vestry Candidates

November 30 - First Sunday of Advent - Thanksgiving Weekend Chrismons - Joanne Robblee

December 7 - Annual Meeting - Tuck, Bishop

December 14 - Christmas – Messiah - Tim Gaylard - Tim is back to share more about the selected pieces of music and meaning of Handel’s glorious Messiah as we prepare during Advent for the coming of Christ.

December 21 - TBD - Tuck

The Saint John's Bible Returns

ree

The Saint John's Bible volume the Pentateuch has arrived!  Tuck has already placed it proudly in its rack in the front of the sanctuary. We are so excited to have this very special book "visiting" us until mid-December.

After the services, if anyone wants to come up and take a look at "Big John," as I lovingly call him, please do so.  Sadly, there are only 8 illuminations in this book and most of them are in Genesis.  If you want to look through the book, please remember to use the wipes that are there before you touch the pages. We hope to have a docent available to assist you.

Beginning September 14th and going to November 16th, a series of presentations that focus on different aspects of the Pentateuch will be offered during Christianity and Culture (9:15-10:15). Please know that everyone is invited to these sessions that follow a brief coffee hour that begins at 9:00.

Also, on Thursday afternoons in October and up until Thanksgiving, you are invited to bring groups or friends to view "Big John."  Docents will be there to share information about the Bible and the illuminations.  If you would like to have the Bible visit a group you belong to, please let Lisa or Tuck know.  We are more than glad to share "Big John" and do a brief presentation with others in the community.

The Saint John's Bible Workshops

The Saint John's Bible - The Committee for Illuminations and Texts, Saturday, October 25

This workshop shares fascinating information about this amazing 21st century Bible. During the development of The Saint John’s Bible, the Committee for Illuminations and Texts provided informed, extensive, and valuable information to the illuminators.  Learn about this process and participate in an exercise that replicates this process in creating an illumination for Noah’s Ark & the Flood.

This workshop will be held in the Undercroft (beneath the sanctuary) of Grace Episcopal Church and will begin at 9:30 and go to 11:00.  There will be a coffee hour prior to the presentation. This workshop is open to anyone in the community who would like to attend.

The Clothes Closet at Christ Church, Buena Vista, continues to need boy's summer clothing size 10, girl's winter clothing size 10-12, including jackets, forks, and some spoons. They are not accepting any other items at this time as they are chock full! The Clothes Closet is open every first and third Saturday of the month from 9 am until noon. You may drop your items off then. Alternately, you can bring your items to the Grace Church office and Lisa will ensure your items are conveyed to the Clothes Closet. Thank you for your support of this valuable asset to our community.

Invitation for Community Run/Walk

Dear Grace Episcople Church,

My name is Cadet Davis Clanton from the Virginia Military Institute. I’m organizing Operation Hope, a community 5K/10K run taking place on October 30, 2025, here in Lexington, VA. The event is dedicated to raising suicide awareness—to honor those we’ve lost, support those who continue to struggle, and remind everyone that no one runs alone.

I know this is short notice, but I wanted to reach out and personally invite your congregation to join us—whether by walking, attending, or simply being present in support and prayer.

Event Details

We would be deeply honored by your presence or your help sharing this opportunity with your congregation. Even a few members’ participation or a brief mention in your bulletin would mean a great deal to us and to those who may need the reminder that they are not alone.

Thank you for all you and your church do to uplift and strengthen our community. Please let me know if you have any questions or would like additional details.

Very Respectfully,

Virginia Military Institute, Class of 2028
