Life With Grace | August 8

Four people sit on stone steps outside a historic stone church, smiling at the camera. Two dogs are seated with them—one small, white, and brown with long fur, and the other large and black with white patches. A young woman in blue sweats and a "Washington & Lee" shirt sits on the far left, and an older man in a cap and vest sits next to her. A woman in a plaid shirt and shorts sits next to him, and a young woman in glasses and a striped sweatshirt sits on the far right. A red table with drinks is visible behind them, and greenery surrounds the church.
The new school year is nearly here and so is our Campus Ministry program. Read below for what's new in Life with Grace.

Dear Friends,

We are drawing near to the beginning of the new academic year.  RATS Matriculate this coming Saturday, August 16.  The following Sunday we will meet our new RATS.  If you might be interested in Adopting a RAT please contact me.

Other students will be returning and our Campus Ministry program will restart.  This year a group of students will be playing a larger role in leadership.  Maggie Leventis, a rising W&L Sophomore and Grace Vestry member will provide communications support. Mia Remington, a rising W&L Sophomore will lead community outreach planning. Connor Wolfe, a rising First Classman at VMI and Grace Vestry member, will provide leadership for the Sunday evening programming and assist with outreach to VMI students, especially Rats. Stone Gardner and Sterret Prevost, rising VMI Third Classmen, will coordinate the Sunday Evening dinner meetings twice a month on first and third Sundays. Paws to Connect starting 11:30 Tuesday September 3, and Choral Scholars will continue under staff leadership.

If you would like to participate in College Ministry please know there are many opportunities from helping with stocking snacks in the College Room to Adopting a RAT for a semester, to supporting the College Ministry leaders.

And please mark your calendar for the report by our Delaney Center Interns Jessie Zhang and Julie Charles at 6:30 pm, Wednesday, September 3. Jessie and Julie have done a tremendous amount of work over the summer on Race at Grace and will share some of their results and insights.

With Gratitude,

Tuck Bowerfind (he/him)

Ceiling fans in the nave: Questions have been asked about using the ceiling fans in the nave during the summer months. Because they force the warm air that collects near the top of the nave downward, it negatively impacts the effectiveness of the air conditioning. Accordingly, the recommendation has been made to leave them off.

Six smiling adults pose inside a church with arched stained glass windows; one person holds a tablet displaying a group video call with additional participants.

RARA Diaper Drive

RARA has a Diaper Drive going on now and we are extending the drop offs at Grace Episcopal to this Sunday, August 10! 1 in 2 households with young children struggle to afford the diapers necessary to keep their children clean, dry and healthy. Let's combat this issue together! If you didn't get a chance to bring diapers to church last Sunday, you still have time. Please bring the diapers you are donating to the Parish Office or bring to church on Sunday, August 10. All sizes are needed. You may also drop diapers off at RARA, 350 Spotswood Drive at the outside donation bin. If you would like to make a monetary donation online, click the link below. Thank you for your help!

The Saint John's Bible Returns

It was such a wonderful experience having The Gospels and Book of Acts with us. In mid-September, The Pentateuch volume of the Saint John's Bible will be arriving and staying with us up until Christmas. We are hoping that some of our parishioners might like to be involved with this second "visit".  Please let Joanne Robblee know if you want to volunteer and attend an initial planning meeting.

If you have questions, please contact Joanne Robblee at joannerobblee@gmail.com.

Renewing Grace Capital Campaign

In an effort to share current information about the Renewing Grace Capital Campaign building project, in August there will be three opportunities for our parishioners to find out what the upcoming plans are as elements of this ambitious project begin over the next few months.

On three Sundays during August (10th, 17th and 31st) between the services, please join us for coffee hour down in the Parish Hall at 9:00. At about 9:20, Tuck or David Passmore will provide a brief overview of what will be happening over the coming months and years.  Then there will be a tour of the building as to the specific renovations that will be occurring.

Clothes Closet at Christ Episcopal

The Clothes Closet at Christ Church, Buena Vista, continues to need girls' clothing sizes 10-18, winter clothes only and boys summer clothing, sizes 10-12. They are not accepting any other items at this time as they are chock full! The Clothes Closet is open every first and third Saturday of the month from 9 am until noon. You may drop your items off then. Alternately, you can bring your items to the Grace Church office and Lisa will ensure your items are conveyed to the Clothes Closet.
