Life With Grace | August 15

The image shows the interior of a church during a service. Congregants stand in wooden pews, holding hymnals or service books, with some dressed formally in suits and dresses. In the center aisle, a clergy member in white vestments carries a tall processional cross, followed by other vested clergy. The baptismal font and a tall Paschal candle are in the foreground, positioned on a tiled floor. The church has wooden paneling, arched architectural details, and warm lighting, with sunlight visible through the open doorway at the back.
Join us this weekend for worship.

Dear Friends,

Sixty years ago, August 14, 1965, Jonathan Myrick Daniels, VMI '61, and 28 companions were arrested for picketing Whites-only stores in Fort Deposit, Alabama. All 29 protestors were jailed in Hayneville, AL. They were all released on August 20.

Daniels and three others went to buy a cold drink at Varner's Cash Store, which served non-whites.  A sheriff's deputy, Tom Coleman, threatened the group and leveled his shotgun at 17 year old Ruby Sales.  Daniels heroically pushed Sales aside and caught the full blast of the shotgun. Coleman then shot Father Richard F. Morrisroe who had grabbed activist Joyce Bailey to get her out of the store. (Note- Ruby Sales is the founder and director of the Spirithouse Project in Washington, DC. Coleman was acquitted of manslaughter at trial and died in 1997 at the age of 86.)

The story of Jonathan Daniels and his companions illustrates the division Jesus proclaims in Sunday's gospel (Do you think that I have come to bring peace to the earth? No, I tell you, but rather division! Luke 12:50)

God's will, Jesus' will, summed up in the commandment to love God and neighbor, is for all people to live non-violently and lovingly. But another kingdom reigns the human heart.  A kingdom that governs by and through violence.  And God does seek a division and no peace with that kingdom.

It is frightening to commit to the kingdom of God in the midst of the kingdom of violence.  After all, there is no defence against violence in God's kingdom beyond turning the other cheek and loving your enemy. But Jesus faced down that fear and obeyed the law of love to the end in order to show us the way into the kingdom the Father wants to give us.

Jonathan Daniels' training as a Keydet no doubt prepared him to face down fear as well as love his enemies. We honor him for his courage, selflessness, and commitment to non-violence and the way of love, the way of the Kingdom the Father is pleased to give us, if we would only enter it.

With Gratitude,

Tuck Bowerfind (he/him)

October 12 - Rewriting the Script - Drew Sorber - Drew will share information about how writing systems were used to preserve the Bible.  He will look into the development of the various scripts used in the early and medieval Biblical manuscripts.

October 19 - Balaam and his Dilemma w/ Moabite King's Orders - Harvey Markowitz - At the beginning of Numbers 22, we are introduced to the Moabite King, Balak, who has just decided to commission the Aramean prophet Balaam to curse the wandering Hebrew people who will soon be amassing on his borders. Though a non-Hebrew, Balaam prays to Adonai to seek His approval for this undertaking. God’s response to the prophet’s request sets off a rich chain of events that has puzzled and intrigued Biblical theologians and historians for centuries. It is the goal of this presentation to identify some of these points of interest and the associated areas of contention.

The Saint John's Bible Returns

It was such a wonderful experience having The Gospels and Book of Acts with us. In mid-September, The Pentateuch volume of the Saint John's Bible will be arriving and staying with us up until Christmas. We are hoping that some of our parishioners might like to be involved with this second "visit".  Please let Joanne Robblee know if you want to volunteer and attend an initial planning meeting.

If you have questions, please contact Joanne Robblee at joannerobblee@gmail.com.

Renewing Grace Capital Campaign

In an effort to share current information about the Renewing Grace Capital Campaign building project, in August there will be three opportunities for our parishioners to find out what the upcoming plans are as elements of this ambitious project begin over the next few months.

Join us on August 17th or 31st between the services, for coffee hour down in the Parish Hall at 9:00. At about 9:20, Tuck or David Passmore will provide a brief overview of what will be happening over the coming months and years.  Then there will be a tour of the building as to the specific renovations that will be occurring.

Many thanks to everyone who has made a pledge or gift to the Renewing Grace Campaign:
